The municipality has population of 7,758 it is situated almost 30 Km away from city of Rhodes and 30 Km away
from airport "Diagoras". The economy of the municipality as the rest of island is based on tourism, production of
olive oil and farming.
Touristically the municipality it is not such developed as the rest municipalities of Rhodes. Archaggelos is very
famous for the carnival in February. The celebration lasts 3 days non-stop and people do what they use to call
"mouzoma" they paint each other's face with black fume. This long lasted habbit it attracts a lot of locals and if it
happens for you to be in Rhodes in February you shouldn't miss it.
The resorst of Archaggelos is Haraki and Stegna. Haraki belongs to malona and Stegna belong to Archaggelos.

Shops and entertaiment

In Archaggelos there is a variety of choice for stores and entertaiment. there are a lot of bars. There are shops to
buy electronic devices, electrical, flowers, super markets, internet cafes. The periods that usually Archaggelos is
full of night life is summer, Christmas and Easter. The prices of the drinks are between 4-5 euros. A dinner will
cost you about 15-20 euros including starter, main course and desert.

Cultural exhibitions

The municipality of archaggelos in cooperation with the cultural organition "Aithonas" organize every summer a a
cultural 7 day exhibition event. Very interesting and attracts a lot of people. Young dancers dancing local
traditional dances and they also offer traditional food for you to taste. Live bands and singers offer an amazing
parade.

Municipality of archaggelos has 8 Schools. 5 elementary schools, 1 junior highscool. 1 TEE, 1 lycium, 1nightime
highschool and 1 nightime lycium.

History of Archaggelos

Archaggelos took it's name from Archagel Michael that is considered to be the protector of the Municipality. Many
small setllements existed in the suburbs of the city anf near the beach from the hellenitic period. After the 7th
century they were abandoned because of the frequent attacks from the pirates. The settlers moved to other
settlements that were safer. A part of them moved to the place where Archaggelos is situated now. Ο

After the fall of Konstantinoupoli (today known as Instabul=In sti mpoli = to the city) in 1453 the Knights that had
sized the island of Rhodes since 1309 they built an Acropolis on the mountain of Archaggelos to protect
themselves from the Turkish attacks. As the rest of the castles in Rhodes The castle of Archaggelos was
destroyed from the turkish attacks later that century.

It is said from arcaeologists and historians that the famous Temple of Agia Sofia in Konstantinoupoli was built
from stone taken from Archaggelos castle.

Villages of the municipality of Archaggelos

Municipality of Archaggelos is constituted from 3 villages. Village of MAlona, Village of Massari and Archaggelos.
In Archaggelos belong the settlements of Haraki and Stegna.

Archaggelos is the only traditional place of Rhodes not in the terms of achitecture but in terms of culture traditions
ethos and morals. The inhabitants of Archaggelos keep on living in exact the same way they use to live decades
ago. They remain very friendly and helpful. If make it these people to like you then you'll have the best holidays in
your life.

Malona have taken it's nae from the word mileonas which means seedbed. The area is famous of the olive oil it
produces and the citrus fruits. The settlers of the village almost all of them during winter they pick yp olives sell
oranges mandarins e.t.c During summer they work in a job related to tourism. Some of the people that are from
malona they have a business whatever this is i Haraki the rest work in Hotel units around the island. Life in
villages is very hard, the rural work is very hard and as soon as thry finish it in March they start working in hotels.

Haraki is one of the most famous resorts in Haraki for the people that know it. Famous for its peace and location.
Haraki is situated in front of a small bay beautiful beach and clear waters. Not very developed as other areas
such as Faliraki but developed enough to offer to it's visitors anything hey wish to have brilliant holidays. During
summer many famous Greek people come for holidays to enjoy relaxation and peace far away from their jobs
and stress. They bay in Haraki as you will notice from the pictures is very picturesque. It has to be noted that due
to a fe bars in Haraki that has been a long time in Haraki their unorginized service and bad manners and also
because of the un coordinate help of the goverment Haraki is not promoted to any place of the world and it
remains to be a place for few. Although the new hotel that is being built in Agathi the moment gives hope to the

tries to improve it in their own way. There is an English group of People called Haraki Rebels that try to support
and try in Haraki for improvement. Due to the increased demand of properties in Haraki the prices for purchasing
an apartment is very high. Although some people they do take advantage of the situation and they overweight their

In Haraki you will find rooms to let, restaurants, bars, cafes , mini markets swimming pool bar with jacuzzis.

The Massari is situated axactly next to Malona 3 Km away. This village like Malona is also famous for citrus fruits
and production of olive oil. Because of the seedbed the citurs fruits of Massari are famous all over Greece as the
most tasteful and that they contain vitamin C more than the rest of Greece. Massari beach was not developed
ecause of the army camp that is situated there, although after the minister's decision to move the camp to
another part of the island the area will be developed. Probably will be sold from the municipality to a private
European company to exploit it.

Sights and beaches of Archaggelos

One the most important monuments for somebosy to visit is the monastery of Panagia Tampika on the mountain
near Archaggelos and the church of Panagia Tsampika on the national Rhodes-Lindos Road. The name
Tsampika comes from the word Tsampa which means spark.Once upon a time a shepherd was looking after his
sheeps on the mountain where the monastery is situated now. Suddenly he sees a spark on the top of the
mountain and another one aafther the first one and another one after that one , so he decides to go and see
what's going on there. He sees an Icon of Holly Mary, he takes the Icon back to the churcj where it belonged. Next
day he goes on that mountai again and he sees again the sparks and the Icon. He takes again the Icon down to
the church. The next day he went there he finds again the Icon and he decided that Holly Mary wanted a
monastery to be built there for Her. The shepherd tald that to the village and they built a monastery. The Icon did
not move again. Is is said now that whoever has a difficulty to make a child gcan go to the monastery pray to Holly
Mary to help her have a child and if you pray with all your heart Holly Mary will give her a child.

The monastery of Holly Mary is celebrating on the 8th of September. The monastery attracts many visitors daily
that they go there to pray and beg Virgin Mary to help them with their problems. There are many religionist people
that have claimed that Virgin Mary helped them with their problem. Once Virgin Mary help you to have a child then
you have to name the child after Virgin Mary Tsampika.

Another place to visit is Haraki, the castle that was built thousand of years ago whioch unfortunately is not in a
good state, also the Sugar mill one of the two ancient sugar mills of the world. You could also find a temple.
These monumets are of great value but due to the inability of the Greek Archaeologist organization are
unprotected. If you walk on the castle you might find ancient artifacts. Many people have found artifacts eihter by
digging which is not allowed or because of rain and weather they came on the surface.

The monastery of Agathis which is situated in Agathi beach is a very imnportant monument.The monastery is
basically a catacomb that during the years of the occupation of the Turks because they were muslims they did not
allow to Christians to pray. Ancient Greeks they built these Catacombs aunder the surface of the earth to be able
to Pray to God. It is said that if you go there during the Greek Othdox easter during the Holly week around 12
o'clock you can hear plalmodies from angels. Not everybody can hear them only the people that truly belive to God.

The church of Agios Georgios in Malona has a stunning look. The campanile standing there proud calling ebery
Sunday the Christians to come near God and Pray.

The castle of Archaggelos as mentioned before is another monument.

Aithonas is also a beautiful sight.

The monasteries near the area of Agathi beach and Haraki are a great place to visit to understand the local
culture.
